Juicing can detox your liver and one of the first signs that juicing is “working” is that you’ll start to notice liver detox symptoms.
Many people who begin juicing or go on a juice fast feel light-headed, groggy, and have muscle aches. “How can this be,” they rightfully wonder. The truth is that you will feel worse until you are better. It’s called a “healing crisis” and most people have some symptoms.
Human fat tissue stores hundreds of environmental toxins like DDE, PBC, and hexachlorobenzene. See, Factors affecting the storage and excretion of toxic lipophilic xenobiotics. “Lipophilic toxins have been introduced into the environment both as functional compounds, such as pesticides, and as industrial waste from incineration or the manufacture of electrical transformer components….The principal route of entry of lipophilic toxins into humans is through the food chain, and most of them are stored in adipose tissue.”
See also, Effects of yo-yo diet, caloric restriction, and olestra on tissue distribution of hexachlorobenzene. “Chlorinated hydrocarbons are lipophilic, toxic, and persistent in the environment and animal tissues. They enter the body in food and are stored in adipose tissue. Loss of body fat through caloric restriction mobilizes stored lipophilic xenobiotics and results in distribution to other tissues.”
The liver is the organ responsible for detoxing your body. Although there are many “cleanses” marketed as liver detox systems, the truth is that your liver needs the vitamins and phytonutrients present in whole foods in order to cleanse and detox itself. The liver also needs amino acids in order to filter out those toxins.
The most important foods for a liver detox are sulfur-rich foods (allium vegetables like onion and garlic and cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and bok choy).
If you’re feeling a little wheezy while juicing, remember that it’s only natural. Also incorporate more cruciferous vegetables into your juices.

I have never done one of these diets before. I see the recipes but how do I know how many of these juiced beverages I need? Is there a calorie system? Does it go by body weight?
Regarding the side effects of juicing on the liver, has anybody else experienced liver pain associated with liver swelling. Started juicing and ran into it, it is caused by the liver being overloaded with toxins (I know this because I went to the doctor for it once after spring break).
What do you mean? Are you saying that so many toxins were released into your body that is overloaded it?
Anabolic steroids can be very taxing on the liver. Thus a lot of a different form of “juicers” use Himalaya Liver Care (here) for liver protection.
Does this help for someone who has hepatatis C, since this disease affects the liver
