The single most common question people ask when they start juicing is, “How do I start juicing.” As kids on the Internet say, “Short answer is short,” and so my answer is: Juice however you like.
When I first started juicing, I used a lot of apples and pears and much less kale, collards, spinach, and other leafy greens. Greens used to taste terrible. I needed to sweeten them.
Now my juices contain almost no apples. My favorite juice is a Real V8 Juice.
Real V8 Juice with Collards
- 2 carrots
- 1/2 of a medium-sized beet
- 1/2 nub ginger
- 1 green apple
- 1 lemon (peeled)
- 2 stalks celery
- 1 handful parsley
Months ago that juice would have grossed me out. Now I crave it.
Some “gurus” may disagree with me. They would argue that there is a right way to juice.
Yet my approach – based on my experience reaching my goals, helping other people make their dream comes true, and reading lots of books and materials – differs from that of gurus. If you want to make a positive change in your life, it’s generally better to start incrementally. You then build on each increment.
Will Smith has had access in music, TV, and acting. As he explains in this story, the way to build your body is “brick by brick.”
If you eat breakfast, ideally you’ll have a juice to start your day. Make your juice in the morning or night before. Then drink it first thing in the morning. You can drink the juice by itself or with your normal breakfast.
When you start juicing, go with this classic:
Carrot Apple Ginger Juice
- 1 apple
- 4 carrots
- 1/2″ nub ginger
Then start incorporating greens:
Carrot Apple Ginger Kale Juice
- 1 apple
- 4 carrots
- 1/2″ nub ginger
- 4 kale leaves (or collards, or celery, or spinach…just use something green)
Depending on your tastes, in a few days, weeks, or months you’ll be juicing more greens than fruit.
But don’t hurry yourself or beat yourself up for not juicing “the right way.” Also feel free to discussing juicing with other like-minded people in this juicing discussion page.
Just juice.
